FFL MVPs

A brief look back at the MVPs of the Fryberger Football League:

2007-2008: Jon Benson

In the early years of the FFL, there was no more dominant force than that of Jon Benson. Often deemed the "Randy Moss" of the league, the lanky, ultra-fast receiver simply could not be covered, also serving as a dominant quarterback, pass-rusher, and return specialist. With the advent of such similar "titans" as Brett Pearson and Mitch Williams, Benson's abilities were rendered more common, but even then, the FFL legend continues to command the field, growing wiser with each passing year.

2009: Aaron Potvien

FFL posterboy Aaron "A-POT" Potvien came onto the scene in late '08, but didn't break out until 2009, when the all-star TE hauled in an unfathomable number of touchdown catches. During that campaign, the phrase "Aaron" became used as a decoy, only to have him thrown to anyway--a trick within a trick if there ever was one. By 2010, Potvien's output had slowed as he was shut out in the opener by Pat Fryberger, but the memory of "A-POT" lives on to this day, with "Aaron" sending shivers down defensive backfields everywhere.

2010: Mitch Williams

"Unblockable" doesn't even begin to describe the 6'8 monstrosity that is Mitch Williams. Feared on both sides of the ball, Williams out-blocked, out-jumped, and even sometimes out-ran the competition, being the first player drafted game in and game out. For a stretch, the rookie sensation was simply unstoppable, even if by season's end his raw talent had been at least somewhat corralled. In the end, the sky's the limit for Williams, literally--as he's the tallest player ever to play in the league.

Raiders run away with victory in primetime

The Bradshaws provided headaches for both teams

ON THE FIRST Monday Night game in FFL history, the Raiders finally notched another win under the leadership of QB Steve Benson and a 'Greatest Show on Turf' ensemble of receivers that gave the Raiders the speed they needed to win. Rookie standout Steve Bradshaw kept it close as the game's all-time offensive player.

With Benson at the helm, the Raiders finally utilized all their drafted speed and put on a show against the big n' strong Vikings. For the first time in years, WRs Pat Fryberger and John Bradshaw got to share the same jersey, teaming with rookie Steve Bradshaw for an electric attack--each hauled in 4 or so touchdowns. Cullen C. continued to improve his play at TE, snatching some snazzy catches and a few TDs. Darren Preiner had solid play at CB while Corey C. had the best game of his career, sacking the quarterback twice over and adding some 10-20 yd. scampers on offense.

For the Vikings, QB Bryan Peterson slipped in his production from the past couple weeks but still led a decent-enough attack. That said, he was repeatedly replaced by Daniel "The Mad Bomber" Preiner in long ball situations, who also did respectably at receiver. Long-armed (and 2009 MVP) Aaron Potvien slowed the Raiders passing game with some big defensive stops, Big Dan Benson gave the Raiders' O-line nightmares, and Kellen Preiner was ever-versatile in the Vikings roaming zone D. Vikes all-star Dave Benson was off his game for the first time in remembrance.

Rookie Steve Bradshaw juked defenses all day long

The game almost marked the first kickoff return of the season. The Raiders now have a slim chance of making the Championship though it would take winning from here on out.

Vikings comeback spurred by injuries, heat

Heat was a factor for both teams

IN A VERY CLOSE contest, the Minnesota Vikings put together a two-game winning streak with the help of some unfortunate injuries and a blistering, hot-as-hell dead heat. The valiant comeback also came under the leadership of Vikings QB Bryan Peterson.

After throwing three, early, first quarter interceptions, QB Bryan Peterson returned to his 2009 form, leading the team to an unlikely comeback against the high-powered Raiders offense. Rookie Vikings receiver C.J. Jaworski hauled in four touchdowns while the veteran Patrick Fryberger juked and zigzaged his way to the endzone three times. FS Dave Benson kept the long ball in check and Big Dan Benson and Tom "T-Bird" Charging Hawk tore it up in the trenches.

The Raiders weren't too shabby, either. The high-flying attack was co-authored by Jon and Steve Benson, going all "Air Coryell" on the opposition in honor of the iconic coach's recent passing. RBs Ricky Thomas (a rookie) and Jared Walterstorff paired up as dual tricksters, fooling and hoodwinking the Vikings defense all day long. 2009 MVP Aaron Potvien also returned to form, catching an early touchdown and narrowing missing another.

The heat pushed players into many a waterbreak while the rough Vikings secondary took its toll on the Raiders receivers, resulting in a few swollen ankles. A handful of players from managed to nab multiple interceptions.

In the end, the Vikings endured the conditions as well as the Raiders and came out with a W. Tune in next week for more doubleheader action, as the Vikings and Raiders continue their rivalry at Fryberger Arena and Central Field.

IN A SPECIAL EXCEPTION, the Benson brothers were once again allowed to team up against the Raiders. The last time this occured was, of course, the '09 Championship where the Raiders rolled them with a high-flying attack. Tables turned this time, however, as the Bensons out-strategized the competition with superior timing and strong defensive zones.

It was all the old familiar places: Steve airing it out, Dave snatching interceptions, Dan holding the line and a defense simply unable to contain Jon... not to mention Jared Walterstorff's tricky nack for getting open. Justin Cadotte, despite a few drops, also provided a strong option at WR and S, rounding out a very tight Vikings unit.

Despite their offensive weapons, the Raiders just couldn't put together a consistent attack. Pat Fryberger couldn't get open. Mitch Williams was off his game. Kellen Preiner managed some impressive blocking but lineman Cullen C. and Charlie Hurley were under-utilized. Late in the 3rd corner, the Raiders made a comeback with '09 MVP A-Pot ("the great white hope") inserted at QB and the beast (Williams) unleashed upon the Vikings quarterbacks. Vikings' RB Walterstorff even went down with an injury but it wasn't enough to push the Raiders ahead.

In what would be Charlie Hurley's last game of the season, the Vikings pulled ahead again in the FFL standings. Tune in next week for a duel out in the country, as the 2010 FFL season continues.

Vikings hang on against Raiders

Rookie Mitch Williams (57) leads the way for the Vikings

ROOKIE SENSATION Mitch Williams burst onto the scene Sunday. Drafted in the first round, the big man on campus provided touchdowns on both sides of the ball, scoring early and often in the Vikings season-opening victory over the Raiders.

At 6'8, Williams was almost impossible to cover, catching and tipping a handful of touchdowns with a couple of interceptions to boot. Also--in a startling turn of events--CB Patrick Fryberger nearly shut down 2009 League-MVP Aaron Potvien, putting a dent in the Raiders usually high-powered attack. QB Steve Benson and Cullen C. switched off under center as the Raiders failed to find their footing until late, when the two-punch combo lit up the field with long bombs.

Because of scheduling conflicts, the game was moved at halftime to Morningside Park. A smaller venue, the tighter field made a defensive struggle into a high-scoring affair.

Big Dan Benson and Charlie Hurley mashed it out in the trenches, while RBs Jared Walterstorff and Corey C. upped their game from '09, hauling in a few touchdowns. And don't forget the wildcard, Kellen Preiner: snatching tricky screens and slants, dinking and dunking it for both teams.

But in the end, it was the old vet Dave Benson, throwing a half dozen touchdowns and nabbing several key interceptions in a game-MVP performance.

A close victory for the Vikings, and a needed one after their final '09 performance. Tune in next week for the rivalry renewed at CENTRAL FIELD.

A rugged, inside-lineman, Big Benson is known for his raw power in the trenches, sometimes to the point of injury for opposing players.

Primary team: Vikings

Still the greatest safety to play the game, Dave Benson hangs deep and brings in interceptions like a machine with his long, lanky arms.






Jon Benson
Primary position: WR
Primary team: Vikings

Two-time FFL MVP Jon Benson arguably remains the most complete player on the field; running, catching, throwing, kicking, he can do it all.






Steve Benson
Primary position: QB
Primary team: Raiders

Under center, Steve Benson provides the most well-rounded QB in the game. When he throws an interception, however, he has been known to deliver cheap shots.





John Bradshaw
Primary position: WR
Primary team: Vikings

A former track and cross-country star, John Bradshaw's speed is nearly unmatched. His catching is still a work-in-progress.






Justin Cadotte
Primary position: SS
Primary team: Raiders

The tall, tough, no-nonsense safety Justin Cadotte keeps the long ball at bay, but his off-field discretions have led some to question his dedication.

Known as the FFL's dirtiest player, Cullen C. is nonetheless a team player and a team leader at that, racking up double-digit sacks in 2009.

Commissioner Pat Fryberger spends his days on the field as the league's last man-to-man, bump n' run cover corner. His cockiness appears justified as the ball rarely comes in his direction.





Justin Grecinger

Fullback Justin Grecinger plays every down with a lot of heart, giving it his all for 60 minutes blocking, catching, and running his team to victory.







Jason Grimm
Primary position: LB/DE
Primary team: Raiders

A situation player used in sneaky zone coverages and blitz packages, Jason Grimm has his eyes peeled for the QB.





Charlie Hurley
Primary position: C
Primary team: Vikings

The man in the middle, Charlie "Chuckles" Hurley valiantly defends his QB from whoever or whatever comes across the line.






Bob Mattila
Primary position: DT
Primary team: Vikings

Big Bad Bob Mattila puts the "stuff" in stuffing the run, taking the trenches for his own and declaring "no one shall pass."






Brett Pearson
Primary position: WR
Primary team: Raiders

A titan of the air, Brett Pearson is, hands down, the fastest player in the league. Tall and lanky, he is nearly uncoverable.






Bryan Peterson
Primary position: P
Primary team: Vikings

Though also great at QB, Bryan Peterson's skills are nonetheless unrivaled on special teams, where he pins opposing offenses deep in their own territory with his towering kicks and punts.





Aaron Potvien
Primary position: TE
Primary team: Vikings

League M.V.P. Aaron Potvien can change the outcome of games with his uncanny knack for getting open and his sure-hands in the endzone. A real talent.






Daniel Preiner
Primary position: QB
Primary team: Raiders


Standing tall in the pocket, Daniel Preiner can stretch the field like no other. The deep ball is defined by his arm, though his attitude has been known to be a problem.




Darren Preiner
Primary position: RB
Primary team: Raiders

"Little-man" Darren Preiner's agility and quickness make him impossible to cover in the open field. Once the ball's in his hands, all bets are off.







Kellen Preiner
Primary position: LB
Primary team: Vikings

A versatile, Renaissance-man of a player, Kellen Preiner is a man of many positions, though his speciality lies in the short game, defending screens and slants with ease.

Kickoff 2009!

Hello there sports fans! Welcome to the official blog of the Fryberger Football League and its upcoming 2009 season. As you can see, I've tried to create a HQ of sorts where everyone can find the schedule, venues, game recaps, who's playing and who's not, and of course a 'Wall of Fame' for when one of us puts on a good show.

What I'm hoping is that Facebookers and non-Facebookers alike will utilize this to keep up on the football plans from week to week during the summer. I've made sure that commenting is open to everyone, so we can even make the plans right here without worrying about tracking people down (though it will probably inevitably happen). I will still make Facebook events and send out calls/emails if necessary, but I really want this work, and to make it work I need your help.

For now, I want to get at least one game in before I head off to New Zealand for a month, or on the upcoming weekend of the 16-17th. Most of you have agreed that Saturday works best, so if you take a look on the sidebar you can see I've scheduled the game for then, with an optional follow-up the next day (we can play it by ear).

An unmovable pass rusher who gives his all on every play, this Benson also possesses a surprising knack for route-running.

Dave Benson S, LB, TE

The greatest safety to play the game, Dave Benson can completely shut down the long ball with his great field awareness in a deep zone. An interception machine.

Jon Benson WR, QB, CB, Blitz specialist

Speed, size, and nearly impeccable hands define this Randy Moss-esque receiver who can dominate the game from either side of the ball. And don’t forget to watch out for his blitz.

Steve Benson QB, WR, DB, P

No one has seen the likes of an arm like that of quarterback Steve Benson’s. Power, accuracy, and great decision-making, he can also thrive on the receiving end, as well.

John Bradshaw WR, CB, KR/PR

His Olympic speed often overshadows his actual contributions on the field. John Bradshaw is nonetheless a solid, unheralded player on both sides of the ball, and especially on special teams.

Justin Cadotte WR, DB, ST

Suffered a near career-ending injury last season. Return is still questionable.

Cullen C. OL, TE, DL

His off-field antics aside, what Cullen represents is a great team player on the offensive side of the ball, serving as both a tower of a tackle, and a safety net of a tight end.

Patrick Fryberger CB, WR, QB, 3rd-down Pass Rusher

A superb cover-corner who is never afraid to get right in the receiver’s face, Pat Fryberger also creates what is known as the Heyward-Bey affect (formerly the Troy Williamson affect), where the coverage converges on him and his burning speed, opening up opportunities for other receivers. A former quarterback.

Charlie Hurley OL, DL, FB

The man in the middle is a force to be reckoned with on either side of the line. A plower and a mauler, make sure you don’t get in his way.

Bob Peterson WR, DB, TE, ST

A lanky, speedster of a receiver, not to mention a hard-hitter in the open field, Bob Peterson tops it all off by being a special teams ace on kickoffs and returns.

Bryan Peterson S, P, QB, TE

A spectacular punter and a serviceable quarterback, Bryan Peterson has nonetheless become famous for his record-setting, 12-16 interception performance last season at the safety position. He is thus in high demand in this regard.

Aaron Potvien TE, WR, DB

His height advantage and unassuming nature make him a constant threat in the endzone, not to mention in his ability to defend it.

Daniel Preiner QB, TE, DB

An old-school quarterback with the flair for the deep ball, all this kid needs a speedy receiver and some good protection from his O-line.

Darren Preiner RB, FB, WR, CB, KR/PR

The little man that could, Darren Preiner shows remarkable quickness in the open field, whether as a back, defender, or returner, and is therefore a persistent threat despite him being at a height disadvantage.

Kellen Preiner TE, FB, LB, S, QB, OL

Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to Kellen Preiner. A student of the game, Preiner can fulfill any role in any situation and do it admirably.

Jared Wolterstorff RB, KR/PR

A master of the trick play, you better watch your back on flea-flickers, reverses, screens, and whatever else is up the offensive’s sleeve, because this little man may be hightailing it to the endzone by the time you actually figure out what’s going on.
